Engagement on social media

Engagement refers to how users interact with your content on social media. It includes actions like commenting, liking, sharing, and clicking on posts. The term comes from the word “engage” and it shows how many people are actively interacting with your content, ads, or profile. The more people engage on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and others, the more popular your content becomes and the more algorithms will promote it.

In simple terms, higher engagement means more reactions, greater visibility, and a stronger impact on your business.

That’s why it’s worth investing your time and budget into content that drives the highest engagement.

What to track in your posts – reach, engagement, and impact

Track the reach of your posts (how many people see them), engagement (how many people interact with them), and overall impact (how many people take the action you want them to take – and what results that action brings). You can track this, for example, in Google Analytics.

In the example below, you can see a post from the sunday-post in the Facebook group – Level Up Your Business (Promo, Strategy & Know-How Sharing) – a space where anyone can promote themselves in the comments.

This post reached 749 people, had an engagement of 80 (15 reactions and 40 comments). Only 4 people clicked the link in the post (and I wasn’t offering anything major there).

How users engage = and boost your engagement

Users can engage with your content in several ways: liking, commenting, sharing, saving a post, clicking on it, or clicking a link.

The more actions a user takes, the higher their level of engagement. It also depends on how much time they spend interacting with your content. For example, writing a longer comment creates much higher engagement than simply liking a post and scrolling past.

How to boost engagement on your social media

Focus on increasing engagement for each of your posts. Encourage people to like and comment, create opportunities for interaction, and ask simple questions that are easy to answer.

How to encourage more comments:

  • ask open-ended questions (use closed questions only occasionally)
  • keep questions short, simple, and easy to understand
  • phrase your questions in a way that makes people feel comfortable answering

Engagement rate

When talking about engagement, you may come across the term engagement rate. It shows what percentage of people interacted with your content. In the example above, the post reached 749 people and had 80 interactions – which results in an engagement rate of 10.68%.

What engagement rate to expect on Facebook and Instagram – real numbers and examples

This depends on several factors: how well you engage your audience, how often you post (including Reels), and how effectively you interact with potential customers, followers, and your community.

Engagement rate in an active Facebook group

An example of a group with active members and an engaged admin is Level Up Your Business (Promo, Strategy & Know-How Sharing)

In this group, you’ll find a variety of posts. The average engagement rate is around 5%, but it can go up to 30%. It depends on how active users are, how engaging the content is, and how well it encourages interaction.

At the same time, there are also posts that get lost and receive little to no engagement.

Engagement rate in an inactive Facebook group

This is more of a passive group. Many people post content, but engagement is low. There’s no active admin, and most interactions happen through the page – PDF activities for children and adults.

The average engagement rate here is around 1%. Some posts offering free PDF materials in exchange for comments can reach around 5%, but most posts stay below 1%.

Facebook fan page

This is a relatively inactive page where I mainly repost content from the Level Up Your Business – Lucie Dědková – podnikatelská mentorka. Reactions here are occasional and usually stay below 1%. However, since it’s not my main channel, that’s not an issue.

Engagement rate of a Facebook profile

On a standard Facebook profile, reach data isn’t visible. On my profile I consistently get the highest number of reactions and comments. I estimate the engagement rate can reach up to 20%.

I also share much more of my personal life than purely business content, which naturally attracts more attention and interaction.

Engagement rate of an Instagram profile

I’ve only had my profile on Instagramu for a short time and I’m not very active there yet. My engagement rate is around 2%.

These are my real numbers and experience. Your reach can be significantly higher if you actively work on it.

If you need help increasing your reach and engagement on social media, get in touch. My team and I will be happy to take a closer look.
