An AI agent is an advanced AI system that acts on its own and gets things done. It communicates with tools, connects with AI assistants, and operates across systems to achieve specific goals. It evaluates situations, makes decisions, and executes actions – often without human input.

Fully autonomous agents are still rare in most businesses. When they do appear, they typically function like junior team members with limited access. What’s far more common today (especially in marketing) are AI assistants working together or alongside humans.
